Teteven Monastery

The monastery stands at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, surrounded by deep valleys, forests, and streams near the Vit River banks.

The monastery, constructed in the 14th century, remained one of four buildings that survived the 1801 destruction of Teteven by Turkish brigands.

The monastery walls contain murals from both the 17th and 19th centuries, representing different periods of Bulgarian religious art.

The monastery functions as a starting point for multiple mountain hiking trails leading into the Teteven Balkans and Central Balkan National Park.

This religious complex survived through centuries of Ottoman rule while maintaining its position as a center of Bulgarian Orthodox traditions.
