Jialulan, Coastal park in Donghe Township, Taiwan
Jialulan, also known by the Amis name Kararuan, is a coastal park on the Pacific shore in Donghe Township, southeastern Taiwan. The site has open grass fields, walking paths along a rocky coastline, an observation deck facing the sea, and outdoor art pieces scattered around the grounds.
The land originally belonged to a local Amis village before it was used as a dumping ground for construction soil from nearby building projects. It was later restored and opened to the public as a coastal park, with efforts to recover the natural setting along the shore.
The name Jialulan comes from the Amis language and refers to a nearby stream where people once washed their hair, believing the water made it soft and shiny. Artists from the east coast of Taiwan sometimes display works made from driftwood and other natural materials along the shoreline, giving the site a creative side that sits quietly alongside the open landscape.
The park sits close to Fugang Fishery Harbor and can be reached by car or bike, with parking available nearby. There is very little shade on the grounds, so on sunny days it helps to bring a hat and plenty of water for the walk.
The observation deck at the park is considered one of the best spots in Taitung for stargazing, as there is very little artificial light in the surrounding area. On a clear night, Green Island can also be seen on the horizon from the same viewpoint.
