La Giannella Beach, Beach in Tuscany, Italy

Plage La Giannella is a long sandy beach on the narrow strip of land that links the mainland with the Monte Argentario peninsula in Tuscany. The shore is wide and flat, backed by a pine forest that provides shade during the hottest parts of the day.

The strip of land on which the beach sits is a natural tombolo, formed over centuries by sand deposited between the mainland and Monte Argentario. The area belongs to the historic Maremma region, which was long marshy and sparsely inhabited before it was developed as a coastal destination in the 20th century.

La Giannella is popular with families and locals because the shallow water and soft sand make it easy to spend a long day by the sea. Along the shore, paid beach clubs with umbrellas and chairs alternate with free stretches where you simply lay a towel on the sand.

The beach is easy to reach by car along the Via Aurelia, with both free and paid parking lots nearby. Since the sand offers little natural shade, bringing a parasol and sunscreen is a good idea for a comfortable stay.

La Giannella is one of the few beaches in Tuscany under WWF protection, which means the dunes and surrounding plants are actively looked after. In early summer, sea lilies sometimes appear near the dunes, a plant that has become rare along much of the Italian coastline.
