Fortezza delle Saline

Fortezza delle Saline is a military fort in Italy with a four-sided shape and thick defensive walls enclosing a rectangular interior. Wide passages run along the inner sides, and a tower stands positioned toward the waterfront to control access.

The Republic of Siena built this fort in the 15th century to protect the coastline. Spanish forces later expanded it with additional structures and fortification improvements.

The fort demonstrates how salt production and maritime commerce shaped life along this coast for centuries. Its location between water and marshland reflects the practical connection between defense and economic activity in the region.

The fort sits in a flat marshland area next to salt ponds, so sturdy footwear and sun protection are helpful. The paths around the structure can become slippery when wet, so watch your footing as you walk.

The fort functioned as a customs post and monitored salt production in the ponds across the river from its vantage point. This system allowed authorities to supervise both maritime traffic and local economic activity in one location.
