Fortezza delle Saline

The Fortezza delle Saline features a quadrilateral structure with thick walls, wide walkways, and four distinct corner elements including a seaside tower.

The Republic of Siena constructed this fort during the 15th century, which Spanish forces later expanded by adding barracks, bastioned walls, and a moat.

This military structure represents the architectural evolution of Italian coastal defenses, incorporating both Sienese and Spanish military construction techniques.

Visitors can reach the fort by taking the Porto Santo Stefano-Giannella exit from the Aurelia highway and following the dirt road after turning right.

The fort controlled the salt production facilities on the opposite river bank while functioning as a customs checkpoint for maritime trade.
