Bailick Park is a public park in Midleton, a town in East Cork, Ireland. It has open green spaces, tree-lined paths, and a large steel sculpture at its center.
The "Kindred Spirits" sculpture was designed by artist Alex Pentek and officially unveiled in 2017, with a delegation from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma present. It marks a moment from 1847, when the Choctaw people sent money to Ireland during the Great Famine, despite enduring their own hardship after the Trail of Tears.
The "Kindred Spirits" sculpture shows nine large stainless steel feathers arranged in a circle, shaped like a bowl to represent a gift of food. Visitors often stop beside it to read about the Choctaw people and the story of giving that inspired its creation.
The park is wheelchair accessible, and outdoor seating is available for those who want to rest. There are no toilets or WiFi on site, so it is worth planning accordingly before arriving.
Alex Pentek developed the sculpture with students from the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, making it a collaborative work rather than a solo creation. The project was supported by local authorities and took several years from design to official opening.
