The flights of the swan, Statue in Esneux, Belgium

Les Envolées du Cygne is a steel sculpture on the Place du Roi Albert in Tilff, a district of the Belgian municipality of Esneux. It depicts a swan with open wings in an upward motion, its flowing lines giving a sense of lightness.

The sculpture was born from a competition won in September 2024 and was created in memory of two firefighters, Yves Peeters and Christian Dejardin, who died during a rescue operation for a swan in the Ourthe river. It was made in local workshops by craftspeople from the area before being installed on the square.

The sculpture stands on the Place du Roi Albert in Tilff, a part of the municipality of Esneux, where anyone passing through can see it. Its steel surface catches daylight differently depending on the time of day and the angle from which you look at it.

The sculpture stands on a public square and can be visited at any time, free of charge. The appearance of the steel surface changes with the light, and it is most noticeable in bright sunlight.

The first models of the sculpture were made from cardboard to test its shape before moving on to the final steel version. This process helped the team see how the work looked from different angles before it was permanently placed on the square.
