Colonster Castle, Protected heritage castle in Sart Tilman, Belgium
Colonster Castle is a medieval fortress that sits on a rocky spur overlooking the Ourthe valley. Its south-facing side displays architectural features from the 18th-century redesign that transformed it from a defensive stronghold into an elegant residence.
Written records of the castle first appear in the 14th century, when it was built as a defensive stronghold. In the 17th century, Maximilien-Henri de Horion undertook a major transformation to convert it into a comfortable residence.
The castle takes its name from a nearby stream that flows through the landscape. Today, the university and visiting guests use its interior spaces for academic events and formal gatherings, reflecting its dual role between education and tradition.
The castle is located about 10 kilometers from Liege city center and can be easily reached via the E25 motorway. The area is hilly with rocky terrain, so wear sturdy shoes and be aware that access to certain areas may be restricted during events.
The castle has been used by the University of Liege since 1963 as part of its Sart Tilman Campus. This unusual blend of historical monument and active university operation has allowed the property to be preserved while remaining constantly in use.
