Caves Sainte-Anne, Natural cave system in Tilff, Belgium
Caves Sainte-Anne is a multi-level cave system in Esneux with passages carved through limestone and crossed by underground streams at different points. The cave contains multiple chambers with natural calcite formations and pools scattered throughout the passages.
The cave was discovered in 1837 when quarry workers broke through into the underground system and recognized its scientific value. Since then it has been developed for public access and continues to attract researchers interested in Belgian geology.
The cave takes its name from a sacred connection to the site and serves as a place where visitors come to witness underground geological beauty firsthand. Many people visit to see the natural formations and streams that have shaped this landscape over millennia.
You will need a special key to enter the cave and should wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing since the temperature stays around 12 degrees Celsius year-round. It is wise to check access conditions before your visit to understand what to expect underground.
The Réseau Lemaire section features a striking deep blue lake that forms naturally underground and becomes a visual highlight of your visit. The lower levels contain some of the longest stream passages found anywhere in the country.
