Elbe Beach is a sandy riverbank in the Altona district of Hamburg, Germany, sitting directly along the Elbe River. The shore runs near Oevelgönne and offers an open view of the water, with large cargo ships passing at close range throughout the day.
The area around Oevelgönne was once home to port workers and shipbuilders who worked near the Elbe shipyards. Over time, the riverbank shifted from a working waterfront into a leisure destination for people living in Hamburg.
Right next to the sand, a public artwork known as the Altona Buoy has displayed figures dressed in white shirts and black trousers since 1993. Walkers along the shore tend to stop in front of it for a moment before moving on.
