Tavira Museum / Palace Galeria, Museum in Tavira, Portugal
The Musée de Tavira / Palácio da Galeria is a municipal museum in the heart of Tavira, housed in a 16th-century palace. The building combines Gothic and Renaissance features, with painted wooden ceilings, azulejo tile walls, and a colonnaded inner courtyard.
The building was erected in the 16th century as a noble residence and later served as the seat of the town government. It was reconstructed in the mid-18th century before opening as a museum in 2000.
The courtyard of the Palácio da Galeria is lined with Renaissance arches and is considered one of the finest of its kind in Portugal. Beyond permanent displays, the building regularly hosts art shows and concerts, drawing local and visiting audiences alike.
The museum is located in the center of Tavira and easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, and on Saturday mornings admission is free.
During renovation work, workers uncovered remains of a 12th-century Islamic neighborhood buried beneath the building. They also found late Gothic wall paintings, revealing how many layers of history lie under a single floor.
