Mercado da Ribeira de Tavira, Marketplace in Tavira, Portugal

The Mercado da Ribeira de Tavira is a one-story rectangular market building on the right bank of the Gilão River in Tavira, Portugal. It has four entrances, a large open central space, and a roof supported by a mix of stone and metal structures.

The building opened in 1887, replacing the temporary tents and stalls that merchants had set up under the old city hall's arcade on the square. Construction took around two years and was overseen by António da Silva Meira. It served as an active municipal market until 1999, when a new market building opened nearby.

The Mercado da Ribeira was restored after 1999 and now houses shops, cafes, and restaurants, while the central courtyard regularly serves as a venue for exhibitions, local markets, and concerts. The wrought iron gates and small ceramic tiles on the outer walls are considered a local decorative detail worth noticing.

The building sits on Rua José Pires Padinha, close to the riverbank, and is easy to reach on foot from the center of Tavira. Visiting earlier in the day allows you to take in the area at a quieter pace before the surrounding neighborhood fills up.

Although the building never received legal heritage protection, the town of Tavira chose to restore it after 1999 rather than demolish it. The small park in front of the entrance, called the Jardim do Coreto, serves as an outdoor event space during local festivities.
