Les Verriers de Saint André is a glass workshop in the artisan park of Saint-André, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of southern France. The workshop is open to visitors, so you can watch glassmakers shaping pieces directly in front of you.
The workshop was founded in 1997 in Saint-André and has been operating in the Albères area ever since. Its director, François Brilliard, brought more than thirty years of glassmaking experience gathered across different regions before settling here.
The porrón, a traditional Catalan wine pitcher with a long spout, is one of the most recognized objects made here. In this region, it has been used for generations to drink wine directly from the vessel without touching the spout with the lips.
The workshop sits within the Albères Méditerranée artisan park in Saint-André and is easy to find when passing through the area. There is a shop on site where you can buy handmade glass pieces directly.
Glass here is still shaped using the mouth-blowing technique, which has not changed for centuries, even though the setting is a modern artisan park. Anyone who looks closely will notice that each finished piece has a slight asymmetry because of this method.
