Château de Pujols

Château de Pujols is a stone fortress built on a natural hill in Argelès-sur-Mer, featuring typical military architecture from the 13th century. The structure includes several towers and walls arranged to take advantage of the terrain for defensive strength.

The Counts of Roussillon transferred the fortress to the Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide in the medieval period, which used it as a grain storage facility until the 15th century. This change of purpose shows how military structures later served peaceful functions.

The castle received recognition as a protected historical monument in May 1956, preserving its architectural heritage for future generations to study.

The site is accessible through marked paths and weather conditions can vary depending on the season. Guided tours are available and help visitors navigate the layout and understand the structure better.

A covered fountain built from traditional cayrou stone stands near the tower, showing how medieval residents managed water supply. This feature reveals how inhabitants ensured access to water despite the elevated location.
