The Monastery of Gorno Nerezi is a Byzantine monastery in the village of Gorno Nerezi, near Skopje in North Macedonia. The complex consists of a small stone church, old surrounding walls, and a few secondary structures that together form an enclosed courtyard.
The church was built in 1164 on the order of Alexios Angelos Komnenos, a member of the Byzantine imperial family. An earthquake in 1555 damaged the main dome and led to restoration work during which some of the original frescoes were repainted.
The church is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, a healer from the 3rd century who is venerated as the patron of doctors and midwives. His image inside shows a gentle face framed by a finely carved stone decoration that visitors can observe up close.
The monastery sits on a hillside away from the main roads and is reached by narrow mountain paths, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. It is easy to combine with a visit to Skopje, which is not far away.
The frescoes inside the church show figures with real emotions and facial expressions, which was very unusual for Byzantine art of the 12th century. Some art historians believe this style may have influenced later Italian painters, well before the Renaissance began.
