室戸世界ジオパークセンター, Geopark visitor center and museum in Muroto, Japan
The Muroto World Geopark Center is a visitor center and museum in Muroto City, in the southern part of Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan. It sits at the edge of Cape Muroto and serves as the main entry point to the UNESCO Global Geopark of the same name, with exhibits on the local rocks, cliffs, coastline, and the communities that have long lived there.
The Muroto area was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2011, in recognition of its rock formations shaped by subduction and ancient ocean floor uplift. The center was established shortly after to help visitors understand how those slow geological forces created the landscape visible along the cape today.
The center is a good base for walking the coastal paths and rocky shoreline around Cape Muroto, with trails accessible directly from the building. There is parking on site for cars and larger buses, and free Wi-Fi is available inside along with lockers for storing bags during an outdoor exploration.
The center features a Geo-Theater where a film follows a fictional scientist named Dr. Magari through the land, sea, and culture of Muroto, making the geology feel like a story rather than a lecture. The on-site Geo-Cafe serves seaweed udon made with deep ocean water, a dish that reflects how closely the local food tradition is tied to the sea just outside the door.
