Hotsumisaki-ji, Buddhist temple at Muroto Cape, Japan
Located at an elevation of 164 meters on Muroto Cape, Hotsumisaki-ji Temple faces the Pacific Ocean at the eastern tip of Kochi Prefecture.
The temple was established in 807 by Buddhist monk Kukai under Emperor Saga's imperial decree and later relocated to its current location between 1044 and 1055.
As the 24th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route, Hotsumisaki-ji houses the principal deity Kokūzō Bodhisattva, carved by Kukai himself.
The temple grounds are accessible daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with parking facilities for 37 standard vehicles and 9 microbuses available on site.
The temple features a special stone called Kane-ishi that produces metallic sounds when struck with smaller rocks, demonstrating natural acoustic properties.
