Iokido Cave, Natural cave formation in Aki, Japan
The cave stretches 40 meters in length, featuring a canyon with shell fossils embedded in walls formed by ocean water erosion.
Ocean waves carved this geological structure approximately 3 million years ago when the surrounding area was part of the sea bed.
The cave serves as a stopping point for pilgrims following the traditional Shikoku Pilgrimage route through eastern Japan.
Visitors can reach the cave through a 5-minute walk from Ioki Station, with guided tours available in Japanese from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
More than 40 species of tropical ferns grow on the entrance walls, maintaining their vitality due to the constant 20-degree Celsius temperature.
