Iokido Cave

Iokido Cave is a natural cave formation in Aki that extends about 40 meters in length. The walls display a rocky canyon with fossilized shells created by ocean water erosion.

The cave was shaped by ocean waves roughly 3 million years ago when the surrounding region was still part of the sea bed. The geological layers in the walls bear traces of this ancient marine landscape.

The cave serves as a stopping point for pilgrims walking the traditional Shikoku Pilgrimage route through this region. The site holds special meaning for travelers undertaking this spiritual journey.

A short walk of about 5 minutes from Ioki Station leads directly to the entrance. The cave is easily accessible and visitors can navigate comfortably with natural light at the opening.

More than 40 species of tropical ferns grow on the entrance walls, thriving in the constant temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius in this microclimate. This fern-covered wall is a rare sight in this geographic region.
