Todoroki 99 Waterfalls, Waterfall system in Kaiyo, Japan
Todoroki 99 Waterfalls is a series of cascades flowing down the Kareitani River, with the main drop reaching approximately 58 meters (190 feet). Multiple smaller falls create pools and channels throughout the ravine system.
The falls were designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and form part of the Shikoku Water Places pilgrimage route. This recognition established it as a valued destination along a traditional spiritual journey across the region.
The name comes from the thunderous roar of cascading water echoing through the ravine. In November, locals carry portable shrines to the waterfall basin as part of ceremonies held nearby.
A hiking path connects the cascades and takes around two hours for a round trip. Parking for regular and medium-sized buses is available, making group visits straightforward.
The number 99 in the name represents abundance and plenty rather than an actual count of individual falls. This poetic naming reflects a Japanese tradition of using numbers symbolically to express generosity of nature.
