Yakuou-ji

Yakuou-ji is a Buddhist temple situated at the base of Mount Io with traditional wooden structures, stone lanterns, and gardens spread throughout the grounds. The complex features multiple areas connected by pathways with views of the surrounding forest and mountains.

The temple was founded in the early 8th century under Emperor Shomu's direction and experienced a major fire in 1188. Emperor Go-Daigo subsequently oversaw its reconstruction, reshaping the complex.

The temple marks the 23rd stop on the Shikoku Pilgrimage circuit, where visitors engage in sutra writing and Zen meditation. Pilgrims visit to practice traditional Buddhist disciplines as part of their spiritual journey.

The temple sits roughly 400 meters from JR Hiwasa Station with free parking available on the grounds. Visitors can enjoy vegetarian Buddhist meals as part of their visit.

The temple houses two Medicine Buddha statues, with one facing backward in its shrine. This unusual orientation earned it the nickname 'Backward-facing Yakushi' among visiting pilgrims.
