Konosekyo

Konosekyo, Natural canyon in Naka, Japan

Konosekyo is a canyon in the Naka region where limestone cliffs rise on both sides of the river, forming a deep V-shaped valley with exposed rock formations and dense forest. The river has cut through the landscape over time, creating this distinctive geological formation.

The canyon gained recognition as one of Japan's top 100 autumn foliage spots through a national selection process in the late 20th century. This designation helped establish it as a destination for visitors seeking fall colors.

Surrounding hillsides are farmed by local residents growing vegetables and fruits suited to steep terrain. These farming methods have shaped the landscape around the canyon for generations.

The site is open year-round and offers parking for approximately 50 vehicles without entrance fees. Visitors should be prepared for steep terrain and various paths that wind through the valley and along the river.

Sharp temperature differences between day and night in this region create exceptionally intense red and gold autumn colors from late October through mid-November. These extreme swings make it a standout spot for fall foliage viewers in the area.
