Marjan viewpoint, Observation deck in Split, Croatia
Marjan viewpoint is an observation deck on Marjan Hill, just west of the old town of Split, Croatia. It faces the old town, the harbor, the Adriatic Sea, and the mountain ranges behind the city.
Marjan Hill has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, as shown by small stone churches and cliff caves used by monks. In the 20th century, the area was declared a city park and planted with trees, giving it the green character it has today.
The viewpoint is a favorite gathering spot for locals, especially in the evening when the light over the city and the sea softens. Couples and families come here to end the day, and many people from Split consider this place a regular part of their daily life.
The viewpoint is about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the old town, with a noticeable uphill section toward the end. Wearing sturdy footwear is a good idea, and arriving early in the morning or just before sunset gives the best light.
Just beside the path leading up to the hill stands an old Jewish cemetery founded in 1573, one of the oldest in the region. Most visitors walk straight past it without realizing how old it actually is.
