Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Scenic mountain route in Tateyama, Japan

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a mountain road crossing the North Japan Alps in Toyama Prefecture, running between Tateyama and Omachi. It links several forms of transport in sequence, including cable cars, buses, and a ropeway, each used to cross a different section of the range.

The area around Mt. Tateyama was used as a sacred mountain path since ancient times, long before it was developed as a tourist route. The modern alpine crossing was completed in the 1970s, making the previously remote passes accessible to a wide public for the first time.

In spring, the so-called snow corridors are the best-known experience on the route: buses pass through narrow lanes between tall walls of snow, and visitors can walk alongside them. The Murodo area, high up on the route, is a favorite among Japanese travelers and is seen as one of the few places in the country where alpine nature can be experienced without any climbing skills.

The route is only open from mid-April to late November and gets very busy during peak spring and fall periods. Planning ahead is recommended, as the different transport legs need to be coordinated and waiting times can build up at popular stops.

The entire route cannot be driven by private car: vehicles are banned on the section crossing the mountains, and all travelers must use public transport. This means every visitor moves through the range the same way, which gives the crossing a shared quality that is rarely found on a mountain road.
