石見銀山遺跡, Silver mine ruins in Oda City, Japan

The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine ruins are a former silver mining site in the mountains of Shimane Prefecture, in Oda City. The site covers a wide area that includes old mine tunnels called "mabu," historic streets, shrines, and the remains of smelting works scattered through forested hills.

The mine was discovered in the 16th century and grew into one of the world's leading silver producers during the Edo period, when it was controlled by the Tokugawa shogunate. As silver deposits dwindled from the 18th century onward, activity gradually slowed and the mine eventually closed.

The town of Ōmori, near the mine, still has old homes, temples, and merchant houses from the time when silver brought wealth to the area. Small shrines dedicated to the mountain god dot the paths, showing how closely daily life and belief were tied together here.

The site covers a large area, so comfortable shoes and enough time are a good idea before setting out. A park-and-ride system is available, allowing visitors to leave their car at a central point and take a bus into the historic areas.

Although the mine was one of the world's largest silver producers, the surrounding forests were actively managed through planned felling and replanting, which is why the hills today look green rather than stripped bare. This careful approach to the land was rare among mining operations of that era.
