Seoraksan Cable Car, Aerial tramway in Seoraksan National Park, South Korea

The Seoraksan Cable Car is an aerial tramway in Seoraksan National Park, near Sokcho in South Korea, that carries visitors up to a viewpoint at around 700 meters elevation. The cabins hold up to 50 people standing, and the ride takes about five minutes.

The cable car was built to open Seoraksan National Park to ordinary visitors after the area received protected status in 1970. The fortress ruins at the top destination date back to the Goryeo dynasty, roughly 1000 years ago.

Near the top station stand the ruins of Gwongeumseong Fortress, which gives the viewpoint its name. A local legend says two generals built the stone walls in a single night to avoid defeat in battle.

Tickets are only available at the on-site counter on the day of your visit, with no online reservation option, so arriving early is a good idea, especially during autumn foliage season. Operating hours change by season and can be cut short by bad weather, so checking the official website before you go helps avoid surprises.

From the top station, a path in the opposite direction from the main viewpoint leads to a small temple called Anrakam and a pine tree named Muhakson that is over 800 years old. This route sees far fewer visitors than the crowded walk toward Bonghwadae, and it also offers a distant view of Towangseong Waterfall.
