오목대, Historic site and scenic viewpoint in Wansangu, Jeonju, South Korea
Omokdae is a small hill in the Wansangu district of Jeonju, South Korea, listed as both a historic site and a scenic viewpoint. A memorial stone and a shelter stand at the top, and steps lead up through the wooded slope.
In 1380, the general Yi Seonggye, who would later found the Joseon dynasty, is said to have rested here with his troops after his victory at the Battle of Hwangsan. King Gojong later ordered a memorial stone erected on the spot, and he wrote its inscription himself.
From the top of the hill, visitors look out over the tiled rooftops of Jeonju Hanok Village spread below. This view is a reason many people come here on purpose, to take in the old neighborhood from above.
The hill is easy to reach on foot from the Hanok Village side, and stairs make the climb manageable. Coming on a clear day gives the best view over the rooftops below.
It is said that Yi Seonggye celebrated his victory here by singing a song associated with Liu Bang, the founder of the Han dynasty in China, a gesture read by those present as a hint at his own royal ambitions. Just across from this hill stands Imokdae, another small hill with its own Gojong-inscribed stele, marking the birthplace of Yi Seonggye's ancestors.
