The Mokpo Modern History Museum is a history museum in Mokpo-si, South Korea, housed in a historic building completed in 1900. The building is designated as National Historic Site No. 289 and has been open to the public as a museum since February 2014.
The building was erected in December 1900, shortly after Mokpo's port opened to international trade, and first served as the Japanese consulate. After Korea's independence, it passed through several uses including city hall and public library before becoming a museum.
The building once served as the Japanese consulate, and its early 20th-century architecture still reflects that origin today. Inside, visitors can browse old photographs, tools, and documents that bring everyday life in Mokpo from past generations into focus.
The museum sits in central Mokpo-si, close to other city attractions, so it fits naturally into a walk around the area. Since it occupies an old building, some sections may be harder to access for visitors with limited mobility.
The building is the oldest surviving structure from Mokpo's modern period and has kept its original exterior for over 120 years. This makes it one of the very few early Japanese consulate buildings from the colonial era still standing in Korea.
