Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary on the Black Sea coast, Turkey

Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary is a wetland reserve on the Black Sea coast of northern Turkey, where the Kızılırmak River meets the sea. The area is made up of shallow lakes, marshes, and dense reed beds spread across three districts: Bafra, 19 Mayıs, and Alaçam.

The delta area has been home to communities since prehistoric times, and archaeological finds have uncovered remains predating the Hittites. Official protection status was granted in 2020, and the site is now a candidate for the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list.

Water buffalo have grazed in and around the wetlands for generations, and their presence is still part of daily life in nearby villages. Their milk is processed locally and remains a recognized product of the area.

Arriving early in the morning gives the best chance of seeing birds when they are most active and the light is soft. Visitors can walk or bike along marked paths inside the reserve, as vehicles are not permitted in the protected areas.

The Kızılırmak is the longest river that both rises and empties entirely within Turkey, which makes this delta the endpoint of a journey across the heart of the country. In winter, more than a hundred thousand water birds can gather here at the same time.
