Samsun Clock Tower, Clock tower in Saathane Square, Samsun, Turkey.
Samsun Clock Tower is a tower structure in Saathane Square with multiple clock faces positioned to show time from different directions. The building was constructed from local andesite stone with a reinforced concrete core and stands at a height of approximately 16 to 17 meters.
The original structure was built in 1886 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II but was demolished in 1948 following damage from the 1943 earthquake. The current version dates to 2001 and represents the third iteration of this landmark.
The tower sits at the heart of Saathane Square, serving as a natural gathering spot where residents and visitors regularly meet and orient themselves. Its central position makes it a key reference point in daily city life.
The tower sits in an easily accessible central square and can be viewed from multiple sides to read the time. Its public location makes it reachable at any time and requires no advance planning.
The clock mechanism from the original 1886 tower was not discarded but moved to Ladik Municipality, where it remains preserved. This detail shows how elements of the city's heritage are maintained across different locations over generations.
