Statue of Honor, Bronze monument in İlkadım, Turkey.
The Statue of Honor stands 8.85 meters tall and combines bronze, marble, and rock in the Kale district of İlkadım. The construction sits in Atatürk Park, where materials and proportions together form a silhouette visible from a distance.
Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel created the work between 1928 and 1931 before its official unveiling on January 15, 1932. Completion required considerable resources and marked an important moment in the early republican art of the country.
The equestrian figure shows the republic founder on horseback, recalling his arrival by sea at this coastal city after a long voyage. Local residents gather in the surrounding park where the monument remains part of everyday city life and serves as a meeting point.
The monument remains accessible year-round and stands in Atatürk Park at coordinates 41.289056 north and 36.336472 east. Visitors find it easily through its elevated position and can view it from several angles during a walk through the green space.
The sculpture traveled aboard the SS Nicea from Hamburg to Samsun in October 1931, crossing seas and ports on its way to the final location. Realization cost 42,500 dollars at the time, a considerable sum for a single artwork of that era.
