Venice Beach Boardwalk, Boardwalk in Los Angeles, US

Venice Beach Boardwalk is a wide paved walkway along the oceanfront in Los Angeles, lined with murals, vendor stalls, and open-air performance spots. It runs for about two and half miles, separating the sandy shore from a row of low shops and food stands.

The promenade grew out of a seaside resort developed by Abbot Kinney in the early 1900s, when he imagined a California version of Venice, Italy. Over the decades, the area shifted from a tourist amusement zone into a gathering place for counterculture, skateboarding, and beachside street life.

Street performers, mural artists, and crafts vendors give the walkway a constant open-air market feel, with music, dance, and live painting visible at nearly every block. Visitors often stop to watch a skateboarding session or a bodybuilder lifting weights in the open gym near the sand.

Early mornings and late afternoons tend to be quieter and cooler, while midday on weekends draws the largest crowds. The surface is smooth and level, making it easy for wheelchairs and strollers, and walking or renting a bike are the simplest ways to explore.

Just behind the busy walkway, a short detour inland leads to a network of quiet canals crossed by small arched bridges and lined with houses, a leftover from the original 1905 plan. Few first-time visitors expect to find this still-water neighborhood so close to the noise of the oceanfront.

A little disappointed by this walk that claims to be legendary. Pretty bad crowd in the end.
