Polk Bros Park is a green space located right at the entrance to Navy Pier on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago. It includes a central fountain, two outdoor performance lawns with tiered seating, paved walkways, and a large orange metal letter P set near the greenery.
The park opened after the Polk family gave twenty million dollars in 2014 to redesign the entrance to Navy Pier. The family had earlier run a chain of appliance stores in the Chicago area, and the gift was intended to create a public space linking the city to the lake.
The larger lawn near the water hosts free concerts and dance shows, with audiences sitting on grass or on concrete steps facing Lake Michigan. In summer, families gather around the fountain to watch its jets move in patterns that suggest waves and swimming birds.
The paths stay open through all seasons, so you can pass through even when the pier’s indoor attractions are closed. On warm days the fountain becomes a splash area, while in colder months it turns into an outdoor ice rink.
The big orange metal letter P that stands in the park is nearly 12 feet tall and acts as a quiet marker rather than a sign. Many visitors walk past it without realizing it honors the Polk family, whose name is also tied to the former appliance stores around Chicago.
