Margaret T. Hance Park, Park in downtown Phoenix, US

Margaret T. Hance Park is a green municipal space just north of downtown Phoenix, laid out with open lawns, winding paths and clustered trees for shade. The terrain slopes gently over a buried highway tunnel, with playground areas, garden enclosures and paved sections arranged around the central grass parcel.

The land was once part of a stretch of older neighborhoods and road infrastructure before the city began converting it into a public green space, opening the park in 1991. Its transformation came alongside the burial of a major roadway beneath the site, which allowed the surface to become a continuous recreational corridor.

Visitors can see how the space gathers different rhythms of city life, from people doing morning exercises near the garden walls to families settling on blankets in the late afternoon. The Japanese Friendship Garden section, with its stone lanterns, calm water and curved paths, offers a quieter way to notice how Phoenix residents use shade and water as social anchors.

Wear comfortable shoes because the park stretches across several city blocks and the paths are wide but fully exposed to the sun. Early morning or late afternoon are the easiest times to walk around, since midday heat can make the open lawns and playground surfaces uncomfortable.

The park sits directly on top of the Interstate 10 tunnel, so you can stand on a lawn and hear faint traffic passing far beneath your feet. Many people never realize they are walking over a major highway while crossing the park.
