Viad Tower, Skyscraper in Midtown Phoenix, United States
The Viad Tower is a 24-story, 374-foot (114 m) office high-rise at Central Avenue and McDowell Road in Midtown Phoenix. Designed in the modern style by HKS, Inc., it was completed in 1991 for the Dial Corporation and its form recalls a bar of Dial soap. The building contains 483,741 sq ft (44,941 m²) of office space and is the sixth-tallest building in Phoenix.
The building was completed in 1991 by architectural firm HKS Inc and marked the last major skyscraper constructed in Midtown Phoenix. Its completion coincided with economic shifts that halted further large-scale development in the area.
The building entrance opens onto a public park decorated with statues and fountains that serves as a gathering spot for both office workers and local visitors.
The tower is located on Central Avenue north of McDowell Road and is easily identifiable when visiting the Phoenix Art Museum nearby. The adjacent public park provides a good landmark and a place to rest while exploring the area.
The tower's shape was modelled on a bar of Dial soap, since it was built in 1991 for the Dial Corporation. A planned twin tower, rotated 90 degrees, was dropped because of the Savings and Loan Crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.
