Arizona Center, Mixed-use complex in downtown Phoenix, United States

Arizona Center is a mixed-use complex in downtown Phoenix that houses retail spaces, offices, and entertainment venues across two towers of 19 and 20 floors. The development includes a 24-screen cinema and various restaurants spread throughout the property.

Downtown Phoenix was losing residents and business to the suburbs when the Phoenix Community Alliance assembled a 16-acre site called the Superblock and sold it to the Rouse Company of Columbia, Maryland, developer of Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Harborplace, on which Arizona Center was modeled. Two Arizona Center opened in March 1989 as the headquarters of Arizona Public Service; One Arizona Center followed in October 1990, and The Shops opened on November 15, 1990, with Mayor Paul Johnson and a parade. Rouse added a 24-screen AMC theatre in 1998, but the mall was largely vacant by December 1999.

The Shops at Arizona Center held its grand opening on November 15, 1990, with a parade and an appearance by then-Mayor Paul Johnson. The complex was modeled on Rouse's Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston and Harborplace in Baltimore. Its upper floors once held nightclubs such as Decades Nightclub and Fat Tuesday, all now permanently closed.

The complex occupies a 16-acre site around a central plaza with landscaped courtyards and fountains, so entering from the surrounding downtown streets leads you into the open-air Shops rather than an enclosed mall. The Shops were renovated between 2017 and 2019, and the upper-floor nightclubs that once operated there are permanently closed. The AMC Arizona Center 24 cinema and the two office towers sit within the same block, and the plaza is the main orientation point between them.

Around 900 palm trees were trucked in from California to landscape the six-block development area when the complex was built. The central plaza's courtyards and fountains, designed by the SWA Group, won a National Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects.
