Nízký Jeseník, Mountain range in Eastern Sudetes, Czech Republic
Nízký Jeseník is a mountain range in the Eastern Sudetes with gentle slopes and extensive forests spread across northern Moravia. The mountains are crossed by numerous streams and reach their highest points at around 800 meters in elevation.
The range was shaped millions of years ago by volcanic activity, with five stratovolcanoes that significantly influenced the land's current form. These geological processes left behind some of the oldest rock formations found in the Czech Republic today.
The name Jeseník comes from streams that flow through ash forests, showing how local names reflect the natural surroundings. Today, the region is a place where walkers pass through forested hills and visit small villages that blend into the landscape.
Multiple hiking trails connect the towns of Bruntál, Odry, Vítkov, and Fulnek, offering year-round access to different sections of the range. Visitors can choose between easier routes through the valleys and more demanding paths at higher elevations depending on the season.
The region serves as the source for three major rivers – the Oder, Moravice, and Opava – that flow from the heights of the range. These rivers play an important role in the water systems and ecology of a large part of Central Europe.
