Kleiner Kranichsee, Protected bog in Ore Mountains, Germany and Czech Republic.
Kleiner Kranichsee is a raised bog located at 930 meters elevation on the border between Germany and Czech Republic. The wetland supports mountain pine, cottongrass, and black crowberry plants in a delicate ecological environment.
Protection began in 1930 when the German portion was officially designated as a protected area. The Czech side was established as a nature reserve 32 years later.
The name references the cranes that once nested here in earlier times. Today visitors walk on wooden pathways and experience the distinctive wetland vegetation and the habitat that shaped this place.
The circular trail departs from Platz des Bergmanns and leads past Hänelhaus and the Oberjugel observation point with information panels along the way. Wear waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes as the route crosses wet ground regularly.
This bog functions as a watershed where water flows outward in four separate directions into distinct stream systems. Each of these four streams carries water into different river networks across the region.
