Svitavy is a district town in Pardubice Region located in a valley at about 435 meters elevation. The town is surrounded by uplands and connected via the Prague-Brno railway line.
The settlement emerged around 1150 when Premonstratensian monks from Litomyšl established the Church of Saint Giles and named it Stará Svitava. This early monastic presence shaped the place for centuries to come.
