St. Gabriel's Abbey, Prague, Former Benedictine nunnery in Smíchov, Prague, Czech Republic
St. Gabriel's Abbey is a former Benedictine convent in Smíchov with a neo-Romanesque basilica at the center of the complex. The building features a distinctive three-story square tower and is now privately owned.
The abbey was founded in 1889 and elevated to abbey status in 1893 as the first women's community of the Beuronese Congregation within the Benedictine order. It functioned as an active monastic center before its purpose shifted in later decades.
The interior features extensive wall paintings depicting saints, biblical scenes, and stories of St. Benedict. These artworks shape the space and remain visible to visitors walking through the building.
The building is located on Holecka Street in Prague 5 and is now privately owned, so access to the complex may be restricted. Visitors should view it from outside or check access conditions before planning a visit.
The complex contains white marble sculptures including depictions of the Archangel Gabriel and the Mother of God. A historical painting of a seated Madonna was covered with cloth rather than removed due to controversy.
