Flower Garden, Baroque garden in Kroměříž, Czech Republic
The Flower Garden is a Baroque garden in Kroměříž with geometric pathways, tall hedges, and covered allées decorated with 44 classical statues. It features two main squares connected by intersecting paths and an octagonal centerpiece with grottos and a colonnaded loggia.
In the 17th century, Bishop Karl II von Liechtenstein-Castelcorno commissioned Italian designers to create this garden. This project marked the shift from Renaissance to Baroque garden design in the region.
The garden takes its name from the colorful blooms arranged in orderly patterns that guide visitors through symmetrical paths. You can see how the strictly laid-out beds and hedges reflect the Baroque ideal of perfect order and control that people once considered the highest form of art.
The garden is open from May through September, offering visitors the best time to enjoy the blooms and maintained pathways. Guided tours help you understand the historical details and botanical features throughout your visit.
The heart of the garden is an octagonal Italian rotunda with underground dark grottos whose walls are decorated with satyr figures. A Foucault pendulum hangs at the center, subtly demonstrating Earth's rotation to observant visitors.
