Andělská Hora Castle, Castle ruin in Andělská Hora, Czech Republic
Andělská Hora Castle is a stone ruin set on a rocky outcrop near the village of Andělská Hora in the Karlovy Vary region of the Czech Republic. Foundation walls and sections of the outer walls are still standing, giving a clear sense of the original layout of the fortification.
The fortress was built around 1300 by the nobleman Boreš z Rýznburk to control the surrounding region. It was badly damaged during the Thirty Years War and was never rebuilt or reused for military purposes after that.
The name Andělská Hora means Angel Hill in Czech, and the ruins still sit on the same rocky rise that made the site so visible from the valley. Visitors today walk among the remaining walls and can look out over the same view that once helped those inside spot any approaching threat.
A marked trail leads from the village up to the ruins and is easy to follow even without prior knowledge of the area. The path can get slippery after rain, so solid footwear is worth wearing.
A well structure is still visible among the ruins, cut directly into the rock to give those inside access to water during a siege. Digging a well into solid rock was one of the most demanding tasks in building a medieval fortress.
