Church of St. Gall, Gothic church in Old Town, Prague, Czech Republic
The Church of St. Gall is a Gothic place of worship in the Old Town Square featuring a three-aisle basilica with cross vaults rising from the 14th century. Its distinctive Baroque facade with curved lines was completed in the early 18th century and shapes the streetscape today.
King Wenceslaus I founded this church in 1232 as one of Prague's earliest parish churches. It was later rebuilt in the Gothic style and received its Baroque facade after Prague became part of the Holy Roman Empire.
The church is named after Saint Gall, an Irish missionary whose veneration runs deep in Central Europe. Visitors can see today how the Baroque interior design makes this a place of both artistic and spiritual importance.
The church sits directly on the Old Town Square, making it easy to reach on foot and nestled among other historic buildings. Visitors should know that interior spaces may not be open outside of worship times, so it helps to check opening hours ahead of your visit.
In the 14th century, the church received a precious gift: the head of Saint Gall, a relic brought by a Bohemian ruler from a Swiss monastery. This donation made it an important pilgrimage destination in the city.
