Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Mountain range in Saxony and North Bohemia, Germany and Czech Republic
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains extend across the German-Czech border, featuring formations shaped by erosion of Cretaceous sandstone deposits reaching heights up to 723 meters.
The region transformed into a tourism destination in the late 18th century when local residents began exploring the mountains and establishing marked hiking trails.
Local sandstone quarried from these mountains provided construction material for numerous buildings, including the Church of Our Lady in Dresden.
The mountain range contains 14,000 climbing routes across 1,100 peaks, with paths varying from simple walking trails to advanced mountaineering challenges.
The Elbe River cuts through the mountains creating a narrow valley, where visitors can observe the formations from historic paddle steamers.

Saxony offers remote locations away from tourist paths. The region features medieval villages, natural areas and cultural sites. Kriebstein and Moritzburg castles display German architecture from different periods. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains contain granite formations and hiking trails. Königstein Fortress stands above the Elbe River. Technical monuments like the Göltzschtal Bridge and historical museums complete the offer.
The Czech Republic contains numerous rock formations, castles, and caves outside its capital. Explore sandstone arches in Bohemian Switzerland, witness Gothic architecture at Křivoklát Castle, or visit the limestone quarries of Velke Amerika. The country's historical sites include Renaissance chateaux, Baroque churches, and medieval fortresses, while natural landmarks feature cave systems and mountain spa towns.
