Description
Ústí nad Labem Region is an administrative area in northern Czechia, stretching from the Elbe valley to the German border. The land shifts from forested hills to flat plains and narrow river valleys that wind through the uplands.
History
During the 19th century, coal mines, blast furnaces and chemical plants opened across the area, reshaping many towns and villages. These works drew workers from the countryside and changed the way communities earned their living.
Culture
The river trade shaped connections between towns for generations, and vessels still pass through carrying goods from the interior to neighboring lands. In some villages near the slopes, grapevines grow on terraces, while elsewhere brick chimneys and factory halls recall the working life of earlier times.
Practical
The D8 motorway runs through the area, linking towns to the neighboring lands in the west and the capital to the south. The Elbe is navigable between Mělník and the border, serving as a waterway for freight transport.
