Lennon Wall, Peace memorial wall in Malá Strana, Czech Republic
The Lennon Wall runs along Velkopřevorské náměstí, showing script, drawings and messages on a stone surface. The colors shift constantly because new artists and visitors paint their own thoughts over previous layers.
After John Lennon died in 1980, this surface became a place of protest against the Communist regime and its control. Police whitewashed the graffiti repeatedly, yet new ones kept appearing, which deepened the resistance.
Its name recalls John Lennon and his work for peace, known to many visitors from around the world. People photograph themselves against it and turn it into a meeting point where politics, art and memory converge.
The walk between Charles Bridge and this wall takes only a few minutes on foot and is possible at any time of day. Anyone wanting to add their own contribution should check the rules beforehand, because not everything is allowed.
During the 2019 renovation, a world map was added at the center, showing the word freedom in more than 30 languages. This map forms a permanent core amid the changing colors and messages.
