The Commandry of the Knights of Malta is a complex displaying three architectural styles, built on Romanesque foundations with Gothic and Baroque modifications visible throughout. The various building phases are clearly evident in the walls and structures.
The complex was founded around 1200 as a center for the Hospitaller Knights, who provided medical aid and protection to travelers. Its location in Malá Strana made it a vital waypoint for pilgrims and wayfarers.
The site now serves as the seat of the Maltese Order's embassy, blending its medieval past with modern diplomatic use. Visitors can still sense this dual identity while exploring the grounds.
The site is located at Velkopřevorské Square near the Vltava River and Charles Bridge, making it easily accessible. Access may be limited since the premises are used for diplomatic functions.
The grounds contain the Church of Our Lady under the Chain, named after a drawbridge with a chain mechanism that once controlled access to the river crossing. This chain-driven system was a remarkable example of medieval engineering.
