Saints John of Matha, Felix of Valois, and Ivan, Religious sculpture group on Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic
This sandstone group stands on the south side of Charles Bridge and depicts three saints in religious robes. The arrangement shows the founders of the Trinitarian Order alongside those they helped rescue.
Created in 1714 by the sculptor Ferdinand Brokoff, these figures honor the Trinitarian Order. The group emerged during a period when such religious monuments were being placed across Charles Bridge.
The group depicts the Trinitarian founders John of Matha and Felix of Valois with Saint Ivan, the hermit they were said to have sheltered. Look for the captives carved beside them, whose ransom the order was founded to pay.
The group stands on the south side of Charles Bridge, on the downstream parapet, so you reach it by walking the bridge from the Old Town or Malá Strana side. It faces the open bridge, and the figures can be studied from the walkway without entering any building.
The group is signed by Ferdinand Brokoff and dated 1714, the year given for its creation. Look for the sculptor's mark and the date cut into the sandstone base beneath the three figures.
