Saint Philip Benizi, Religious memorial statue on Charles Bridge, Czech Republic
Saint Philip Benizi is a marble sculpture on Charles Bridge that depicts the saint holding a cross, a book, and a palm branch. The statue stands on the north side of the bridge among many other religious figures carved in stone.
The statue was installed in 1714 as a donation from the Servite convent in Prague, carved from Salzburg marble by sculptor Bernhard Michael Mandl. It was part of a wave of religious monuments added to the bridge over many centuries.
The statue represents Saint Philip Benizi, who served as general superior of the Servite Order and worked to strengthen religious communities.
The statue sits on the north side of Charles Bridge and is easy to spot while walking across. Visitors can view it freely from the bridge's walkway without any entrance requirements.
Saint Philip Benizi was a 13th century Florentine friar known for acts of peace and reconciliation between rival factions. His presence on the bridge links Prague's religious tradition to an Italian saint whose story centers on healing divisions.
