Oparno Castle, Gothic castle ruins near Oparno, Czech Republic
Oparno Castle is a Gothic castle ruin perched on a hilltop in Oparno, Czech Republic, built from stone with pointed arches typical of medieval construction. What remains includes sections of fortification walls and basement chambers that give a sense of how large the original structure once was.
The castle was built in the Middle Ages as a defensive stronghold and played a role in regional conflicts during the 15th century. After it was abandoned, the structures slowly fell into ruin over the following centuries.
Within the castle grounds stands a former chapel that was turned into the Church of the Holy Trinity, used as a burial site by the Trčka family. Visitors can still see its modest remains standing close to the old walls.
The site is reached by marked hiking trails, and sturdy footwear is recommended since the stone surfaces are uneven throughout. The walk up takes a while, so leave enough time if you plan to combine the visit with other stops nearby.
The Colloredo family lost the castle during World War II when Nazi authorities seized it because of their resistance activities. This makes it one of the few Czech heritage sites where the wartime confiscation was directly tied to anti-Nazi opposition rather than ethnic or religious persecution.
