Vimperk

Vimperk is a medieval town in Prachatice District, South Bohemia, situated on elevated terrain and surrounded by forested hills. The center organizes around a main plaza and network of streets preserving the original town layout, with a castle overlooking the built-up area.

Founded in 1251 by King Ottokar II, a castle was built to control trade along the Golden Trail connecting Passau and Prachatice. Over centuries, the settlement grew around this stronghold into a significant regional center.

The historic center displays three churches representing different architectural periods, each reflecting how faith shaped the community over time. These buildings remain active gathering places woven into local life and celebrations.

The town sits on the railway line between Strakonice and Volary with regular train connections to surrounding cities and the I/4 road providing access to major routes. The compact historic center is best explored on foot, with streets that slope gently toward the main plaza.

A major German electronics manufacturer operates a substantial factory here, employing a large portion of the local workforce in a way that is unusual for a small mountain town. This industrial presence, established decades ago, continues to shape the community's economic life today.
