Castle Velhartice combines Gothic architecture with Renaissance elements, featuring a stone bridge connecting the main palace to a cylindrical defense tower at 640 meters elevation.
Constructed between 1290 and 1310 by the Lords of Velhartice, the castle served as a residence for nobility until Prince Windisch-Graetz's expulsion to Austria in 1946.
The castle grounds include a medieval brewery, Renaissance palace interiors, and an outer bailey that displays traditional rural architecture from the Šumava region.
The castle receives over 50,000 visitors annually and offers guided tours through both the Gothic ruins and the Renaissance wing during the tourist season.
A massive stone bridge with four arches spans a deep ravine, connecting the main palace to the Putna defense tower through an engineering achievement of medieval times.
